What do you do when you miss your local cuisine sorely while being stranded for an extended period of time overseas? You are forced to recreate it. This brings me back to the time where we made bak kut teh in Sydney, even resorting to proofing our homemade you tiao dough in our steamy bathroom that served as a make shift proofer. Desperate times call for desperate measures.. and for a group of German expatriates here in Singapore, that's exactly what they did.
Mr Berlin, a stall specialising in the currywurst has created quite a stir since its appearance along Shenton Way last year. Digging deep into the similarities of Berlin's iconic street snack with Singaporean's love for rich and spicy foods, it seems as if a match made in heaven.
While on my recent visit, we had the fortune of sampling everything on the menu. With a short and concise structure, ordering is kept simple. Want your sausage sliced up with a drizzling of homemade curry ketchup? Go ahead and choose between pork and chicken; next, dictate who breaks out in sweat with the different spiciness levels: Berlin Calling, Go West and Break the wall; and finally choose between the sides of organic bread roll($10.90) or classic red/white fries ($12.50).
If it's a hotdog you're after, there are a couple to tease your palate. The German Bratwurst, Cheese Sausage ($9.80), original hot dog or the Hot Dog Special ($9.50); the latter being my favourite consists of a Nuernberger veal sausage topped with ketchup, mustard, minced onions and curry powder on a freshly baked organic bread roll. And get this, as pictured above, the hot dogs are HUGE and seriously bang for buck if you're looking to fill up on something before after-work drinks. Fresh out of the oven, the bread roll was crisp on the exterior, it's innards moistened slightly from the steam emanating off the sausages. An unstinting squiggle of ketchup, mustard and mayo tantalising the palate with every bite.
To be very honest, grub here is not particularly fantastic, neither is the ambiance that threads on muted grounds in comparison to the bedlam reverberating off the walls from the neighboring pubs and bars. If you're looking for a quiet time to wind down after work, Mr Berlin might just fit the bill. They do carry Weihenstephan lager beer on tap, so that might serve as an incentive to fans out there. Priced at $6.50 for a half pint and $12 for a full, that is honestly a steal in the CBD region. Otherwise, conduct water parades with the Weihenstephan Weissbeer ($12.50/btl) or the Dunkel ($12.50/btl), this will definitely get your in the right gear to kick start the weekend.
