With Christmas just around the corner, the long enduring relationship between food and booze is reaffirmed again. No, this ain't a post about the merits of pairing alcohol with food, because sometimes I prefer to turn my focus to the former. Food, especially Christmas feasts refers usually to a massive, horrendously dry bird perched unceremoniously on a tray with side condiments of dull roasted vegetables and lumpy mashed potatoes, which you'll usually proceed to drown in processed brown gravy and store-bought cranberry sauce on the side to sweeten the appalling deal, before turning to the host to say, "This is lovely, (fill in victims name), we should do this again next year.". Fake smiles fill the awkward space in the room.
We all the drill. The intensive efforts it takes to plan a Christmas feast, much less prepare one from scratch. This year, cut yourself some slack and head on down to Morganfield's for some Christmas joy both in-store as well as take home packages for your home or office parties. Starting from 16th November onwards till 31st December, tuck into an enticing range of Christmas eats such as Bourbon Marmalade Glazed Leg of Ham, Christmas Roast Chicken and Pork Roast amongst a slew of other regulars.
I was fortunate enough to get a preview of the scoop - from start to finish, we're talking about everything that is on the Christmas menu - I consumed in one night *burp*. Let the debauchery begin...
Dinner got off to a lardaceous start, with Beer Candied Bacon ($9.90) and a the Pork Trio ($15.90) to serenade us as we await the main attractions. The former, glazed with hazelnut brown nectar beer was as visually arresting as it was delicious. Warm sticks of bacon, sporting a caramelised hide with nutty nuances tempting you to ravage the cup that holds it. But you don't, because there's that ominous red basket filled with more beer candied bacon, pop corn pork and sliced pork bratwurst to fill in the gaps. Great for those who have a penchant for the porcine category. Wash these down with the Red Christmas Cooler ($8.90) or the White Christmas Sangria ($16.90), the former, a mocktail with a fruity mix of lemon, watermelon and cranberry juice while the latter carries a bit more swag; a refreshing mix of white wine, peach puree and diced green apples and oranges.
Then servers ducked in from the wings and moved the scenery into position for the next act, the Bourbon Marmalade Glazed Leg of Ham, Crackling Roast Pork and Roast Chicken.
At this point, I was at my wits end. The reality of the situation where there was more meat than I could possibly handle, hitting me like a ton of bricks. The plan was to go slow and steady; the sticky heat in the atmosphere not doing me any favours.
Ranging from a whopping 4 to 5kg, the Bourbon Marmalade Glazed Leg of Ham ($168.90) pleases the crowd with varying degrees of success. If you're lucky enough to score a slither of meat tucked right below the thatched hide, that bit sporting just a thin layer of fats perforated with the flavors of the sweet and smoky bourbon marmalade glaze, that will definitely impress. The Crackling Pork Roast ($38 for 1kg) pleases with its tender succulent pork belly sporting a wickedly crisp crackling skin.Trying to avoid the big bird this year, Morganfield's Roast Chicken ($32.90) is a pretty good alternative - think juicy and plump chicken stuffed with rosemary, onions and celery and carrots for that extra tantalising bouquet.
When it comes to Christmas platters, Morganfield's goes the extra mile to ramp up presentation and they do so with their Morgan's Christmas feast ($149.90) comprising of half a slab of Hazelnut Sticky Bones, Cranberry Sticky bones, 400g pork roast, 3pcs of sausages, 200g of Gammon ham slices, 200g turkey breast ham slices with sides of potato gratin, roasted cauliflower, glazed carrots, garden salad, corn on cob and corn bread. If that doesn't spell epic, I don't know what does.
Home of the Sticky Bones, there's no way you're leaving Morganfield's without trying their ribs. My votes are with the Christmas Cranberry Sticky Bones ($29.90 for half and $45.90 for full) - deliciously aromatic, the cranberries add a tart sweetness to its hide, the festive fruit sauce generally embodying the Christmas spirit. Served with french fries and coleslaw, this is a definite must have on your trip down.
