Running for a limited time only - " Doya No Ushi No Hi" hits the town running once more at Mikuni in Fairmont Hotel Singapore.
From the 19th July to 6th August'2016, guests will be granted the opportunity (of a lifetime) to sample the special 6-course summer lunch menu highlighting unagi, or eel from Aichi in Nagoya prefecture. I, for one, did not know that unagi was traditionally consumed for its vitality boosting properties; Chef Moon Kyung Soo's masterful breakdown of the Chinese character "鳗" emphasizing that point.
Come summer time, a festival takes place in Japan where they indulge in copious amounts of unagi in a bid to accumulate strength for the rest of the year. Mikuni follows suite and brings the festivities to our doorstep with a gastronomic journey highlighting the prized delicacy. So if you're a young married couple looking eagerly to bear the impish ones soon; dining in might be a good option.
Then there's sake as well; the Ohmine Junmai Daiginjo that we relinquished our thirst in; the perfect fire starter to a passionate night.
But first, let's get down to business with respect to the food. Chef Moon begins the meal on a genial front, with a refreshing starter of Organic Japanese Green Salad with breaded and fried snow crab leg as crowning glory. The amalgamation of orange, citrus, blueberries and black sesame seeds padding the palate for a graduating assault of flavors that are soon to follow.
This is chased by an ornate box of Seasonal Sashimi - Hokkaido Sea Urchin, Aori Ika, Toro Belly, Yellow Tail and Sea Bream. Each and every slice fondly telling tales of the Chef's attention to provenance and presentation.
But hold your horses as the next three courses are displayed stunningly in separate vessels on an ominous black tray but still singing a mighty tune in unison. The Chef's Seasonal Selection Zensai captures the imagination; it's entirety displaying a playful mode of 'nose-to-tail' dining, featuring everything from crispy eel bone, eel skin in the Eel Yahata Maki Burdock, eel gelatine in the melt-in-your-mouth slabs of Barbecued Eel Jelly as well as the Smoked Salmon Yuzu. What a treat!
Also commendable is the Sunomomo Moriawase, juicy scallop, shrimp, ginger flower, seaweed and tomato lay pickling in a tangy yuzu infused broth. Take nibbles of the accompanying pickles on the side to avoid palate fatigues as the star attraction - The Charcoal Grilled Eel on rice may come across a bit assertive at times.
Finely grilled with a glistening coat of sticky glaze painstakingly coated repeatedly whilst resting over licks of the charcoal flames; the unagi is a force to be reckoned with; and even better when lapped up gregariously with the fat grains of Japanese rice that have had the same addictive sauce adhered to its grains. Superb.
Lunch reaches a pinnacle with the presentation of dessert set as soothing the over-stimulated taste buds. The Japanese Shiso Leaf Sorbet with yogurt mousse and strawberry cleanses the palate with its sweet and savoury impression.
Thus concludes the Mikuni's special summer set lunch priced at $138++ per person. A welcome break in a tranquil space truly worthy of its price tag. Only available today 19th July to the 6th August'2016.
