As if finding a brunch spot worthy of some Sunday sauntering isn't easy enough; The Pelican does some internal revamps to introduce the new ala carte brunch menu focused on classic East Coast American breakfast favourites. Fuelled by the affordable option to pair your meal with a free flow prosecco; it's little wonder that this establishment gets the chops from me.
However, do note that timing is a little tight on the ultimate weekender session and this boozy brunch is available only on Saturdays from 11am to 3pm with Sundays being represented by tight barricades around the restaurants - closed. Added merits include the stunning views of the Marina Bay waterfront area - tranquil waters lap at your feet (well, technically about a grass patch and pavement away) as you sip on that bubbly with little care in the world.
For starters, the Oyster Platter (1/2 dozen for $30) beckons. Similar to my first two experiences in 2014 (here and here); the freshness of their seafood loot is undeniable and the large Taylor USA oyster featured here are medium-bodied with a creamy plumpness, low salinity and possess mild refreshing factor reminiscent of cucumbers on the finish.
Getting these are a no-brainer when kicking off the boozy weekend festivities, unless of course you've had too much to drink the night before, whereby consuming oysters becomes a rather grotesque affair. I've first-handedly experienced the latter; the oyster doing a reverse-trick on its way down to the gut.
Moving on, the Trout Roe Linguine ($23) rings in a spa-like semblance with linguine tossed in a light chili oil, lemon zest for citrus spikes and sauteed kale to up the hipster ante. Unfortunately, the natural trout roe struck us as a little to fishy to be enjoyed fully.
Instead, make a move for the Crab Omelette ($26) - the golden pillow of mammoth proportions holding generous amounts of crab meat between silken folds of egg. Over the top, a luscious slick of house-made lobster butter that elevates the "simple" dish to stardom.
The general consensus around the table that everything was just a touch under-seasoned applicable again in the course of the omelette, as it did the pasta.
Thank goodness for the Old Fashioned Crab Cakes ($24) that picked up the pace with its pulse quickening crisp cornmeal crust giving way to generous fillings of crab accompanied by a bed of the most smashing remoulade I've had in a while.
Finish off with the Banana Bread ($14) which have to be acclaimed to be the 'best banana bread' by many but pales in comparison to some of the most basic homemade versions I've had before - just because the underlying banana factor wasn't sufficiently pronounced in the toasted slab. Sure, the peanut butter ice cream touted just enough saltiness to be worthy of its title, but it's icy texture was barely agreeable with me, nor my companion.
Menu items are a couple of hits and misses at The Pelican, but a tilting of heads to soothing view of the city skyline makes the experience much more palatable. That's not mentioning the $35 top up for free flow prosecco? - Waiter please!
