Remember the steak article that I did a year back regarding 28 Juicy Steaks under $30? Truth is, I never really got round to trying all those on the list for fear of gout. However, a year has past and it has been my fortune to be able to continue the stake out, this time extending my footprint to the far east of the island.
As far as affordable steaks go, Braserio in Joo Chiat is up there with my personal favourites of The Betterfield and iSTEAKS. It takes little convincing to know that you've stumbled upon a bargain; one step into the establishment and the throngs of diners, large families with every member working their way through individual steaks with voracious appetites affirming the affordable yet luxurious deal.

Missed out on the early bird discounts for mooncakes?
Have no time to visit the mooncake fair?
Fretting over which mooncake to purchase for the family (without burning a huge hole in your wallet)?
Then you had better heed my advice and head down to Song Garden located on the 2nd floor of Mercure Singapore Bugis to get in on their mooncake selection. The emphasis on the traditional baked mooncakes a refreshing respite from the peculiarities of this year's snow skin offerings from various establishments touting strange flavours such as tom yum, pink peppercorn and more. Call me old school, but there are certain lines that can't be crossed in celebration of such a historical occasion.
Redolent with nuts, the Five Assorted Seeds is one that would pander to the more matured taste buds. Almonds, pumpkin seeds, walnuts, persimmon and sesame seeds are held together with a sticky maltose filling which is just sweet enough to allow for the roast on the nuts to shine through. Unlike many renditions I've had, Song Garden's version doesn't crumble at the slightest touch nor stick to the teeth in unglamorous nooks and crannies. Definitely a keeper and a fine display of the artistry in the kitchen.
I've always been one to love white lotus paste, plain. However, come Mid-Autumn Festival, I cave in to the occasional yolk inception. The dynamite orange ball adding just that bit of luxurious salt to bring out the best of the smooth lotus paste. At song garden, the mooncakes come just a little more tanner than usual, the crust itself yielding a robust flavour that I prefer.
White Lotus (1 Box of 4 pieces): $50.80
White Lotus Single Yolk (1 Box of 4 pieces): $56.80
White Lotus Double Yolk (1 Box of 4 pieces): $62.80
Five Assorted Seeds (1 Box of 4 pieces): $62.80
Perfect little gold ingots; these salted egg yolk lava custard mini mooncakes from Song Garden are my recommended for most 'worth-it' purchase this mid autumn festival. Heat it up a little and you're guaranteed a nice flowy centre providing a faintly salty contrast to the milky crust.
Mini Custard Salted Egg Lava Mooncakes (1 Box of 8 pieces) for $62.80.
Note that this mooncakes are only available for purchase from Song Garden itself from now till the 4th October or until stocks run out.

BITE: The new date-and-dine app that will find you love (or at least a great meal)
Navigating the dating waters can be enormously intimidating at times, so what better way to lighten the mood than meeting over a meal?
The cross-table interactions, both verbal and non-verbal, are powerful ways of fostering genuine connections between two individuals.
Bonus: When the food is excellent.
But then again, bonding over disastrous meals might just bring foodies/picky eaters together.
Dating apps these days don’t usually encourage you to get off the app and meet in real life, just calling for you to make initial judgements and connections through a screen.
But Bite is a new date-and- dine app that lets you meet new people while eating delicious food, all in one great application. A no-brainer since Singaporeans are thinking about food all the time! Now there’s the added convenience of meeting someone online and fast track to taking them out for a meal! Perfect for foodies like me (and you!)
Download Bite (www.bite-official.com) now on your Android or Apple device.

The long story short, I made cake... It's not that I don't usually do (in actual fact, the struggle to churn out stuff amidst a busy schedule is truly daunting) - BUT I make exceptions. And when someone delivers a spanking new Kenwood Chef Sense KVC5000T to your doorstep, you whip it out from its box with the enthusiasm of a thousand horses before a chariot, and proceed to test out its speed control with the simplest of ingredients such as cream and eggs. The smooth whirring of the motor as it fluffs up billowy mounds of cream, the epitome of true ecstasy.

With regards to locally brewed beer, there a couple of establishments that come to mind; but I have strongly mixed feelings about gentrification. Starker Fresh Beer has proved its case with it's Lager beer achieving gold award in Asia Beer Fest 2011 - also the same beer used to marinade those wicked classic wings that I devoured with monstrous ferocity later.
The largest branch of Starker Fresh Beer located in Zhongshan Park has some rather queer design details to its facade. Gently curved arches and shuttered facade reminiscent of traditional pagodian designs on the building that reflect the oriental spirit of the Park it is laid in; framing the views of Sun Yat Sen Nanyang Memorial Hall at one end.
As much as it is queer to find a western style brewery in such settings, the family oriented crowd will fancy its child-friendly surroundings, the courtyards and open gardens serving as a perfect playground for the children to roam around, still under the watchful eyes of parents pouring themselves a pint from the mini barrels of Starker Fresh Beer (a choice of lager, charcoal, dunkel, lychee or aromatic ranging from $43-$48 during Happy Hour to $57.90-$61.90 during regular hours)

Not the first time I'm expounding its merits but Orchard Central is a treasure trove of brilliant activities, cool stores peddling niche goods and food meccas worth boasting about. When it comes to dining in OC, we're completely spoilt for choice, whether it be fusion-Thai at Som Tam or rambunctious casual izakaya style dining at Sumiya; there's loads of ways to fill the stomach. I didn't want to get all excited but the prospects of embarking on a purely Japanese centric food trail around Orchard Central was enough for me to let our a rip-roar cheer. Delving into the heights of Orchard central and sifting through the various Japanese offerings from shabu shabu to home styled grilled items and finally ramen, we bring you the best of OC. Think of this as your definitive check list for your next visit. I assure you, my recommendations are true.
Such is the density of Japanese restaurants on the 8th floor of OC that, of an evening, the various smells adrift from boiling stock pots, grilled pork bellies and the different cook stations on the buffet line can be intoxicating. For shabu shabu, head on over to Shabu Sai, a casual Japanese sukiyai/shabu shabu establishment that does good food and remarkably good value (especially considering you can eat to your hearts content and that sauce counter tho.).

Yeh, so the title says it all. I recently got quizzed by the folks at ANYMAP and you can read the entire scope of the interview over on their blog.
A little snippet for the nosey ones ensues
.
.
.
Anymap: What sets your blogging style apart from other food bloggers?
Fundamentally_Flawed: Honesty is the best policy. And I guess it's in this department that I differentiate myself from most other food bloggers. Pertaining to food establishments that make false statements about the preparation methods or provenance of their food, they may get away with pulling the wool over most diners' eyes, but there's no fooling me. I will, and have called their bluff, too many times to count. The harsh brutal reality delivered as feedbac to owners and chefs is something that I pride myself on as constructive criticism should work in improving a business.
(read more on the ANYMAP site)
Meantime, all that talk about pizza is making me hungry.
Recently, I've had the privilege of working with the dynamic team from FeastBump, a platform that features over 200 restaurants that deliver to you, wherever you are based on this island. From exotic dishes to healthy eats and high end pastries, FeastBump has got you covered, sussing out the most convenient solutions to restaurant quality food. First conceptualised by the creators of Oddle, a cost effective backend solution for restaurant's takeaway options; the team after being tormented by a lack of food choices that deliver to their workplace have since diversfied and set up a seperate platform offering food delivery and listing of their existing merchants on this new platform. To that, I say brilliant! and gave the system a whack.
My order meant for 4 30pm arrives earlier than expected at 4 00pm (not a bad sign). Those who hangout at Timbre would be familiar with the pizzas I'm about to feature. The Goodfellas ($20.50) is a quizzical combintion of plump shrimp, garlic butter curry sauce, crisp cereal under a bed of melted mozarella cheese with a final flourish of egg crumbs. The verdict drawn was universal, "weird" being its main definition, the crust pizza dough and further smashings of egg crumbs drawing out moisture from the plump prawns leaving them high and dry. Working to better effect is the Roasted Duck with Hoisin Sauce ($20.50) - classic combination of duck and sweet sauce reaffirmed here. abetted by scatterings of shitake mushrooms and crispy popiah skin. There's no resisting this pizza here, even more so with a bottle of beer at hand. Other pizzas worth fawning after include the Beef Con Carne Pizza and the ridiculously fusion Black Pepper Crab rendition.
So here's the deal, I'll be giving out 2 x $30 FEASTBUMP vouchers for my selected merchant Timbre. So follow this standard instructions and stand to win a chance to chow down on free pizzas!
Here's how to win:
- Follow Fundamentally-Flawed on Facebook
- Leave a comment on the "FEASTBUMP giveaway" post on my FB page, telling me which other Feastbump merchant would you be interested to try (clue: visit Feastbump's website here)
- Tag at least one friend in that comment with whom you would like to share the pizza with.
Two lucky readers will be picked at random. Competition ends on the 4th March '2016 23 59 so do make sure to act fast!
