Saturday night picks - Chikin for feisty Szechuan yakitori and Asian inspired tipples

Spice devils! Step right up! Chikin, a new fusion joint to join the throngs of half-blood variants in the precinct offers something a little different. Western influences find no place here as the kitchen combines the founders' love for Japanese yakitori and Szechuan Shao Kao (BBQ meats). An extremely underrated marriage resulting from the co-founder's  Ms Tay Eu-Ten frequent visits to Chengdu.

Much to my amusement, there is no overt restaurant plagiarism here, the kooky result making me feel   at home instantly. Red and purple hues wash the surfaces of the shop-length bar counter. Barely a few steps in and I swiftly relegated myself to bar-fly status -  plopping myself down and perusing the cocktails list with enthusiasm.

[NEW MENU] Sumire Yakitori House: More than just the usual Yakitori

Sumire Yakitori House was first introduced to me as the chicken specialist tbh, that sent a shiver down my spine - was it a slaughterhouse? Apparently not as it is backed by a rich history and firm footing in Japan itself where it already has over 50 outlets located around the country. Yakitori items are the name of the game here, the intimating stacked menu of grilled sticks throwing me off just a little. But I was here for the new menu - featured wholesome dishes and lunch sets that gets customers more bang for their buck.

At Sumire, you get a taste of Japanese restraint amidst breezy casual settings (during the day) that transits into the usual more stark and formal becomings at night fall. Booth seating ensure privacy settings are kept in check and do I even need to mention the small of flame-licked fats that float out from the kitchen occasionally?

Teppei Daidokoro: Food on sticks and a mean Kaisendon

I've always shied away from standing, take-away food kiosks. Mainly because I used to shun the thought of judgemental stares when eating alone or when I pick unglamorously at my teeth for stray strands of fibres fearfully under the public's watchful eye. But for once, I would actually consider ordering from a kiosk and braving the ridicule (apparently this only exists in my imagination) for a quick lunch - reason being, the food at Teppei Daidokoro, a spin-off the original and almost out-of-reach Teppei - is reasonable on the pockets and surprisingly gratifying for what it's worth.

The latest Japanese yakitori concept of Chef Teppei Yamashita and a local couple. Daidokoro is a takeaway kiosk concept offering yakitori sticks, fried croquettes in various shapes and sizes as well as their infamous kaisendon. Despite it not having the customisation options of the Syokudo in ION Orchard (read my review here), you'll still be bogged down for choices given the extensiveness of the small kiosk's menu; each and every glistening stick vying for attention.

Nobiro Japaneses Restaurant and Sake Bar: Hidden Gem in the West

I distinctively remember the day we ventured into the secluded vicinity of Nobiro Japanese Restaurant and Sake Bar. The driver starred at us with bemusement as we forced halted the cab at a rather peculiarly situated bus stop across the highway from the restaurant, supposedly rested within residential property. Sure enough, a little walk up from the bus stop found us starring with rare wonder at a small stretch of shops along Faber Hill estate, housed below an old albeit spacious looking residential apartments.
