A for Arbite: the abc of things

Founded by the budding talents of three secondary school buddies, A for Arbite is the projectile of these youngsters vision. After a successful venture with Arbite at Serangoon Gardens, the trio opened a new branch in Aliwal Arts Center medialized under the 'back-to-school' theme with primary colours splashed boldly across the room and wall to wall chalkboards to radiate that feel.

Determined to slake my hunger for my first drop of caffeine that day, I ordered my regular Cappuccino ($4.50), beans are from Tiong Hoe Speciality Coffee - the result, a well balanced, smooth and robust coffee with a kick of cocoa notes at the end. A for Arbite had started the pleasantries rolling.

Unfortunately, it came to a sudden halt there for me. As much as the wait staff were good humoured and accommodating in our shuffling of tableware around in order to get our food shots; the food fell short of expectations. My Lamb Burger ($22) had an odd ratio of ingredients to it, the box of thin cut fries looming over the minuscule burger menacingly. Packed between two homemade buns, is a lamb patty cooked so much so that I mourned its death. Spices and seasonings, reminiscent of Middle Eastern Cuisine was evident, however, the lamb could have benefited from a little less time spent on the grill. The onion rings and fries were also pedestrian.

My friend's Salted Egg Crab Pasta ($24) fared a whole lot better, here zita pasta is tossed in salted egg and curry leaf oil. A large deep fried soft shell crab is the crown jewel, and the shreds of crab meat permeate the pasta with every mouthful. A rather good effort on the kitchen's part to integrate the society's insatiable craving for anything salted egg yolk into its menu.

Thank goodness for the Entertainer App 1-1 main course, my burger came free with the purchase of the more expensive and proportionately better pasta dish. No complaints there!
