with a wink and a smile
Thru the bright streamers of light flowing in through the clear window panes of the breezy cafe, he caught sight of a girl. Owner to a beautiful smile, even brighter than the glaring reflections off the metallic surfaces as the sunlight hit the passing vehicles on the roads below. He was moonstruck and worst still, stranded with a deafening thudding of his limp heart to stifle. Leaning back against the safety of his arm chair, back facing his envisionment of Aprhodite, he caught his breath and prayed for a sign of requited love.
Then, swinging his head over the arm rest, he saw a shy image of a girl, angelic smile, with the cheeriest of eyes turned on him. He took it all in, his racing heart living and feeding on this very moment of existance. finalement they had found each other...
On a side note, Happy ROM anniversary to the happy couple Kelvin and Sharin. May God bless you with many more sweet years together!
faces..places...
faces.. places
These cupcakes were done as a Xmas order for a lovely lady to her dearest colleages. 50 different faces, 50 different names and descriptions...suffering in silence as i recieve text messages from the exhausted bf who is currently outfield. Can't hear his voice as he needs to be tactical. What crap...
Miss you.
Quiet Time
First accomplishment of the year? For me, it was the fitful struggle as I scampered up the highest peak in Southeast Asia, Mount Kinabalu (Sabah) on the 1st of Jan'2009. Sometimes, on all fours even, with limbs stretched out to mimic the prowess of a 4WD yet to no avail. With the whistling of the passing winds rising over the granite slopes of the boulder topped mountain and nothing but the throbbing heart beat racing from exertion to interrupt, the silence resonating from the black lands stretched far beneath our feets was close to a deafening ordeal. Yet thru the numerous leg cramps and the fatigued muscles crying out for fresh oxygen with every single step, I had a new lease on life. Perhaps being a strong person in a weak body was to be my greatest challenge yet. But with anything, perserverance and effort would pay off. Endure.. i must.
The book launch, under my Uncle's wishes were to have an intimate settings complete with a fine spread of desserts and sweet nothings. This I gave my best shot at, with a complete set of 10 assorted desserts ranging from cookies, tartlets, parfaits to miniature cupcakes. My favourites of the lot were definitely the Mango Cheesecake Parfait with Chocolate Cashew Cookie Crumbs and the miniature Midas Cups (chocolate caramel tartlets).
And despite the initial fears of not having enough food to deal with 50+ guests, I was left with the ordeal of having to clean up the left overs due to the onset of a smaller turnout than anticipated. *groanz*.. overall, It was an enriching experience, earning praises and suspicious 'thank-you's' from the guests including Ivan Heng! astounding..
Yet, despite the promising year to come, several things in my life had come to a stand still. Like a train derailed. There I was.. stuck.. marooned. And subconsciously, all alone...
face cupcakes
So many faces...I recall that when I was much younger I used to exhibit at least a little artistic streak to all my works. Whether it be a childlike drawing, a murry of colors and shadings, or flouncing about on my imaginary stage pretending to be superstar belting out song after song. Whether it was a hit or painful tune, I don't know now.
But somewhere down the line, all these little 'artistic expressions' just vanished into thin air... Perhaps you could attribute it to the regiments of the Singapore education system. Or perhaps it was my single bad experience (read: major flop!) with my acquaintance with the piano. It wasn't long before reaching age of adolescence that it was clear that there wasn't an ounce of artistic spirit left in me; in fact, with all traces wiped out, it appeared as if they weren't ever there from the start. Life went on, and with my new embracement of the sciences and math, I left the past in the dirt. Satisfied with the thought that I would never have to return to it again.

However, life with its many twists and awakward turns somehow lead me through a whole junkyard of battles in the jungle, conflicts with flight mechanics and then back into the arms of art once more. Baking with its uncomplexed beauty rose to a high status. And there you were, I was once again doing things I had never done again for a long time. My artistic soul rusty but rearing to go...
Had an order for some customised face cupcakes for a bunch of her frens. Best of all, I felt very involved trying to piece together a potrait of their faces thru a string of descriptive words; braces, thick eyeliner, botak, red cheeks, small eyes, braids, pouty lips. You name it and tried to recreate it. A fun experience thoroughly.
Hope that they will like it.

dilemma

Just a personalised fondant topped cupcake design that i was working on for a customer of mine.
Guess I'll be offering this service more in the future...
the customisation thingy kills me sometimes though. All the brainstorming... argh.

Love/hate relationship with baking.
Meantime, as Sihan struggles to stay afloat in the torential flow of fierce currents downstream, she still goes places...

Estelle's Disneyland Party

And as I mentioned in a previous post, I came to attend a friend's party and even gathered the honor of being able to bake her 21st Birthday cake. *woots*. Plus there were the honorory mentions at the end. hehe. But still, given the birthday girl's large exposure to good food and excellent dining experiences (fyi. she writes for the nanyang chronicles), she was indeed one tough nut to crack. Having several expectations and need for the surprise element when it came to cake flavor and design. Well, just another day at work for me then...
So voila.. before I launch into a full episode about the whereabouts of the party.. here's the Cake I baked. Ivoire Lavender as i call it, it comprises of a 4 layered, 2 tiered cake made of lavender white chocolate whisper cake layers sandwiching the most delicate lemon swiss meringue buttercream and christened with a shadow of white ganache. Topped by a few sprigs of iced butterfly cookies (due to the bdae's girls fondness of butterflies) and line after line of colored white ganache.. a sweet delectable eye-candy of a cake popped out. And for once, I was satisfied with my creation...

the party was held in the function room of her condo. It was a little strange given that the room was stashed away on the second floor of the clubhouse rather than the ground floor. But still, the air of excitement and not to mention.. youth was floating throughout. From the vibrant rose petals gracing the steps as we made out entrance to the colorful banners that stretched across the ceiling. Every detail in this party was well thought about and executed. It left the few guests feeling warm and welcomed.

Food was catered in and named special names according to tales from Disneyland such as the Lady and the Tramp Spaghetti and Meatballs, etc.. And to make matters more interesting. Guests were dressed up to the nines in their disneyland themed costumes. Such as the likes of Jasmine, Aladdin, Abu the monkey, Stitch, Princess Fiona in Shrek, Snow White, Belle, Pinochio... It was terrible fun seeing everyone parading in the room with their custumes and assumed personas. But not so fun when you're seriously undressed and slightly scruffy from the baking class you attended just awhile ago... argh.. if only i had known.. i would have erm.. probably throw on a fresh blouse or something... hehe.
Lollipop Cookies that i baked as door gifts for the guests...
Next up, the games preceeded with it being led by a lady in a blue suit.. wait a minute.. *rubbing eyes*.. isn't that stitch?! yesh.. apparently the games commentator was Estelle's friend.. a very amiable girl dressed in a uber thick Stitch suit.. i reckon she must have sweated off a bucket just clambering into the bodysuit. But then again, that is besides the point! Kudos to the team behind the games, thanks for bringing the crowd some entertainment! and i apologise for my very shallow knowledge regarding disney facts..
and then finally.. the cake cutting ceremony begins.. of course headed by an unslew of thank you speeches and award presentations to the party's best dressed. Most furry character anyone?!
so with a darkening of the lights overhead and the lighting of dazzling candles on the cake... it was like magic. the procedure that would otherwise seem so mundane.. enhanced by the presence of so many beautiful people.. supportive in spirit.
When the cake was finally sawed thru with gusto by the fair maiden... i gawked.
'ooo...it has purple layers!', I said.
Now if you think clearly.. that is a rather silly remark coming from the baker of the cake. In fact.. it invited an amountable number of stares from people nearby.. *woops*.. Like what?! I'm just amazed that's all. To me, the cake spelt success.. with a smooth layering and a slight lilac tint to the floral scented cake; it was just bewildering. Apparently the hostess thought it was tad sweet but then again she commented that it was lovely to look at. A consolation for me despite feeling a bit sore. The ingredients and frostings were chosen on the basis that they would and should survive the sweltering heat.. and they did! *yipee*
okay.. so enough about cake talk. Here's a group photo of Estelle and her beloved friends.. Just adore all the costumes featured.

I would like to thank the dear birthday girl for inviting me to the party and even more so for allowing me to bake her 21st Birthday Cake... one of the rare occasions i get invited to a party for which i baked for.. Kinda reminds me of how I got to know Evangeline last time.. But that's a whole different story...We'll leave that to next time.

Now its time to catch some sleep... *yawnz*

This cake is also my entry to Layers of Cake organised by Laurie of Quirky Cupcake. Layered cakes rule!!! Please refer to her site if you wanna take part in this awesome event!
spread your wings and fly butterfly
Baked this for a 21st Birthday Party for a friend of mine. Along with the 30 customised decorated Cookie Lollipop sticks, this was a tough task to tackle. Even more so given complexity of the cake, a delightful cake infused with the floral notes of lavender and an acquired richness from the melted white chocolate added into the batter. It didn't help that i met with several 'accidents' along the way like baking my first batch of cake and absent mindedly forgetting to add the sugar in!!! the end result, a deflated and severely dense cake. *groanz*... there goes all my ingredients down the drain. Arghs..
subsequently, everything worked out fine. And nibbling on the scraps of cake while leveling.. i must say that i absolutely love the cake. Moist and awfully aromatic! Guess this will be my entry to Layers of Cake by Laurie of Quirky Cupcake. But I'll have to wait till i get a cross sectional shot of a slice of cake before the posting! *toodles*
gifts and birthdays
Brother has came back! Intact, safe and sound; from the land of drugs in abundancy and where whores line the street. you know where I'm talking about don't you.
That's beside the point.. because, most importantly, he got me a gift!!!
Macarons dragged all the way from a quaint little shop in the french provinces all the way to my door step! Gosh! i'm so happy! Now i get to taste authentic french macarons!

Hailing from a modest little shop called Maison Richard, the macarons were.. hmph.. how do i describe this.. different. Yes, indeed they were incomparable to any confections I had taken to at bakerzin, obolo, canele and even my good friend Evan's home made ones. I'm no expert in this field however the two are worlds apart. The french ones.. crunchy with little ounce of the chewy texture you find in the 'norm' ones. I highly suspect that they somehow dried out over the few days of travel. but still I have my doubts. Now i'm confused.. what are the real macarons supposed to taste like? *hmph*... i reckon I'll probably have to head down to France one day to check out the real deal. No cheating this time...
and again from the oven. here are some peeks into my week filled to the brim with baking! Somehow I can't imagine life w/o baking for the next month. Perhaps I could beg someone to lend me baking equipment during my stay in melbourne. *pleads*... I won't want to resort to stealing.. hehe.

Can't wait till the next posting. Something magical brewing out of the oven soon!Meanwhile, here's a little video to occupy yourself.. just for laughs!

gimme more!
How else to please a bunch of grown ups stuck in an office with frigid cold temperatures and nothing but strong, black and almost repulsive coffee; than to bake a something a little pleasant. nothing beats a tinge of color and a sprinkling of multi-coloured jimmies to make someone smile. No wonder it wasn't long after i placed the cake bell on the pantry counter tt the entire collection was evacuated.
This time i turned on a easy recipe and used the remainder of ingredients that i had left in my pathetic pantry to spice it up a little. so what goes with banana cake? nutmeg and cinnammon of course. well, how about frosting? cream cheese tinted with vanilla? or chocolate frosting? hmph. tough choice.. so why not both? haha. thus explaining the strange heritage of my tiny dessert that carry forths a latitude of flavors so rich and indulgent. Spiced Banana cake topped with a layer of rich chocolate ganache and finally with a dallop of vanilla cream cheese frosting and showered with jimmies; color to bring out the child in you. how delightful. what's more.. they tasted gorgeous. as complimented by the various colleagues who even admitted to the temptation to take seconds (had i not stated to 'pls take one' on the note i left on the table; i didn't mean tt intentionally of course. hah). But it was good seeing grown man going gaga over their sweet things.
tee hee, don't blame me for the multiple shots yar. i just can't help myself! furthermore, i think an overdose of sugar-high would be good since I'll be taking my leave to Tioman Malaysia for the next 3 days. *woots*. lets pray i dun return with anymore sandfly bites and of course return with lots more gorgeous pictures!
Last but not least, this is an order by a nice lady for her ex colleagues at amex wishing them a happy easter day which is this coming Sunday. Just to make matters straight yar. orite. I'll take my leave from here. all u guys please enjoy the long weekend! *cheers*V-day offers

midweek
here's a surprise from Babe from obolo for me! wow.. its the v-day collection cakes. *YUMZ*. raspberry chocolate mousse. divine...
Besdies orders I also took the liberty to bake my signature bluberry cake for the guys back at office. hehe. they loved it! most of them in fact ask me what am I doing in Aerospace, i should be baking as profession instead.. HMPH... haha.

farewell my frens
had dinner at ichiban sushi at wisma with a few aero mates as sort of a farewell gathering for Gun Kiat and Janan who will be leaving for Tu-delft next week. A rare occasion indeed especially after our industrial attachments (IA) started and all the coursemates were strewened all over the island. Still, everyone were extremely chummy with each other and just being their natural selfs with the exception of Calvin who was on the other extremity of being overly uproarious.. he was all over the place! boucing all over the walls.. i attribute it to work stress and being deprieved of girl watching while working. haha. orhh.. poor thing.
we had a great time chatting over a extended meal in the resturant to the dismay of the long queue of patrons snaking its way outside the premises of the restaurant doors. Finally we relented and headed out of the resturant to spilit the bill. From there, we headed off to dempsey's Ben and Jerrys for some sweet stuff! *woots*. i can never get enough of tt! and I've realised tt though i've been here at least 3 times, I have not once took any photos of the place. Nice, cozy and comfy, this Ben and Jerry's outlet at Dempseys complete with a B&J van parked outside is the ideal place for group gatherings; wedding planning (???) and some steamy couple action, or rather not. We had a ball of a time though...

The 8 of us ordered two monsterlicious (i think its called tt.. haha. slp does bad things to your already flawed memory) which basically consists of 6 scoops of ice-cream of your choice topped with fudge or caramel sauce, whipped cream, and 2 toppings plus a few cookies and bananas thrown in. WOAH! haha. tt sounds lyke a mountain full of sweets! trust me.. IT WAS!!!

Conversation at our table with Pual, Pingting, YG and i strayed from nonsense to downright crap. haha. unlike the other table, mostly conversing about intellectual stuff (stole snippets here and there).. i reckon its pingting and YG.. there are in a constant brawl when their together. tt was how my 2011 was like throughout the sem. *sigh.. shakes head*. haha.
after the sweet affair, we went for a stroll around the region and as it was getting late and SOMEONE had to head to his gf's hse. so we ended the night on a rather abrupt note... CALVIN!!! u owe us ice-wine yar! hehe.
Anyway, it was great meeting up with the guys after such a long time. Next up, more meet ups please!!! and bon voyage my dear frens gun kiat and Janan! take care whilst in delft and study real real hard. dun forget to play too of course! and dun forget the weed? *ahem*.. just kidding. hehe.

had an order come in for a bdae cake: vanilla chocolate swirl cheesecake. sorrie about the smudged wordings yar! *bleah*
also... took the chance to bake banana cake for the people in my support team at work as well as my supervisor.. as they say the way to man's heart is through his stomach. wahaha. in fact they were so pleased at having something to munch on tt they ask me whether this baking wld be on a regular basis. To tt; yesh! it is! haha. have to discipline myself to try out new bakes at least once every week yar... think tts my resolution for the year. haah.
