Starker Fresh Beer @ Zhongshan Park:

COM

With regards to locally brewed beer, there a couple of establishments that come to mind; but I have strongly mixed feelings about gentrification. Starker Fresh Beer has proved its case with it's Lager beer achieving gold award in Asia Beer Fest 2011 - also the same beer used to marinade those wicked classic wings that I devoured with monstrous ferocity later.

The largest branch of Starker Fresh Beer located in Zhongshan Park has some rather queer design details to its facade. Gently curved arches and shuttered facade reminiscent of traditional pagodian designs on the building that reflect the oriental spirit of the Park it is laid in; framing the views of Sun Yat Sen Nanyang Memorial Hall at one end.

As much as it is queer to find a western style brewery in such settings, the family oriented crowd will fancy its child-friendly surroundings, the courtyards and open gardens serving as a perfect playground for the children to roam around, still under the watchful eyes of parents pouring themselves a pint from the mini barrels of Starker Fresh Beer (a choice of lager, charcoal, dunkel, lychee or aromatic ranging from $43-$48 during Happy Hour to $57.90-$61.90 during regular hours)

boCHINche: Argentine restaurant relocates to Amoy Street

Partaking in the same revelry that Employee's Only and Burger Joint exudes on a daily basis, boCHINche, formally guarding the second level premises of Common Man Coffee Roasters has recently seen a move to the more dynamic precinct of Amoy Street. Sporting more intimate yet charmingly casual vibes, the marbled counter tops and no-nonsense decor is a far cry from the previously chic upholstery on booth seats and purposedly slack canvas directors chairs as part of the al-fresco dining area. The cleaner cut, sophisticated look with marbled and teal highlights making it a great venue for business lunches and after work hangouts with the added boosts of liquid courage that is succinctly encouraged just as your step through those doors.

The Pelican Seafood Bar & Grill: brand new ala-carte brunch menu

COM

As if finding a brunch spot worthy of some Sunday sauntering isn't easy enough; The Pelican does some internal revamps to introduce the new ala carte brunch menu focused on classic East Coast American breakfast favourites. Fuelled by the affordable option to pair your meal with a free flow prosecco; it's little wonder that this establishment gets the chops from me.

However, do note that timing is a little tight on the ultimate weekender session and this boozy brunch is available only on Saturdays from 11am to 3pm with Sundays being represented by tight barricades around the restaurants - closed. Added merits include the stunning views of the Marina Bay waterfront area - tranquil waters lap at your feet (well, technically about a grass patch and pavement away) as you sip on that bubbly with little care in the world.

[One Michelin-starred 2016]: JAAN unveils New Spring Menu

COM

With the recent unveiling of the stars still settling in the minds of gourmands, now, hell-bent on seeking out the $2 Michelin-starred Hong Kong Soya Sauce Chicken Rice hawker in Chinatown's Smith Street; I'm glad to profess that my virgin experience with dining at Michelin starred establishments have risen from a balmy zero to a credible 14 joints miraculously over the span of a few hours at the heart-stopping, enthralling gala dinner held at Resort World's Sentosa.

My most recent endeavour being lunch at JAAN where Chef Kirk Westaway's newest spring creations reflect a sense of positivity, almost akin to a spring in his step, grounded by traditional tastes linking back to his childhood spent in the UK. The critics have waddled in gradually even after Chef Julien Royer's departure from the plush pads in 2015, leaving his sous-chef to fill his shoes. By then, Chef Kirk Westaway had already achieved some form of stardom, cooking nine other chefs in S.E. Asia under the table before embarking on a similar challenge around Europe; hence, it is easy to say that the progression of taking the reigns was a natural move; albeit a challenging one for most extreme foodies to accept.

Surf & Turf @ The Edge (Pan Pacific SG): Tuesday night Special

COM

Every Tuesday night, Pan Pacific's Edge pulls off a grand buffet feat: Surf & Turf at Edge really sets out to impress both the seafood and meat lovers with a seemingly endless diversity of premium fusion items!

The aim of the buffet is to showcase the versatility of meat and seafood, with both classic presentations and contemporary interpretations. New and noteworthy highlights that have been specially crafted to fit the theme include the 24-hour Braised Wagyu Beef Short Rib topped with Seared Hokkaido Scallops and Spicy Beef Bulgogi Pizza and Shrimps. For the former, the scallops are decent but are clearly outshone by the immensely tasty, almost melt in your mouth beef short rib. The latter is an adventurous Italian-Korean union atop some wonderful white sauce and crispy thin crust, coming close to giving the classic margherita a run for its money. My favourite new dish would have to be the heritage special Wok-fried Fish Noodles with Roasted Pork that its quite simply bursting with flavor and familiarity.

Running for a limited time only - " Doya No Ushi No Hi" hits the town running once more at Mikuni in Fairmont Hotel Singapore.

From the 19th July to 6th August'2016, guests will be granted the opportunity (of a lifetime) to sample the special 6-course summer lunch menu highlighting unagi, or eel from Aichi in Nagoya prefecture. I, for one, did not know that unagi was traditionally consumed for its vitality boosting properties; Chef Moon Kyung Soo's masterful breakdown of the Chinese character "é³—" emphasizing that point.

Froth @ Ascott Raffles Place: New menu on new territories

COM

Froth has just reopened right in the heart of the CBD at the swanky Ascott Raffles Place hotel, and with a new location must come new menu mainstays, which perhaps can be best described as boldly unconventional! The muted, minimalist interior design cannot be more different from the exhilarating culinary adventure one embarks on with every dish tasted. Each course is a surprise, with some being decidedly more pleasant than others, but executed with the same kind of extravagant flair all the same.

Wanton: Seng's Noodle Bar - Meat fest with a side of egg noodles

0
COM

My first encounter at Wanton was filled with lofty aims to please the stomach and prevent the impending doom of a incurable hangover on the partner's part. However, this came to naught with the annoying chimes from the service staff cajoling the two of us, starving wanderers to purchase sake? Not the best way to start the meal, especially when the partner had visibly entered a state of euphoria from a little too much liquid confidence earlier. We shouldered on and politely declined three times before the stoves were fired up to greet our last orders.

The menu is relatively simple to navigate. The staple egg noodles ($1) followed by an entourage of premium 'sides' in the form of Braised pork knuckle, pork belly, pork belly and more pork belly. I kid you not, the feast that you'll derive at the table is nothing short of a nutritionist's nightmare. What's going to stop you from ordering a beer now?
