Asanoya Bakery will have you tossing up between new savoury and sweet specials

Having recently been caught in the crossfires of a conversation that revolved around breads at a dinner table has really made me evaluate my favourite picks. When asked which my favourite bread shop was, the answer - Asanoya. And with their recent downsizing of breads to paw sized awesomeness to abet eating on-the-go, it's easy to see why I'm so besotted.

That very first bite of Asanoya's newest Brûlée Croissant reeled me in. And because I'm feeling all emotional on New Year's Day, I would have described it as a taste of success, surrender, satisfaction, joy and celebration all wrapped up in one bite; or one cube to be exact.

Can't get enough of the Sakura season in Japan? Asanoya Bakery celebrates the romanticism of the pink blossoms with a whole range of baked goods ranging from the Sakura Swiss Roll ($15.80 for a whole and $3.50 per slice) to their traditional Karuizawa loaf in Sakura style with Cured peaches ($3.50/100g).

My favourite of the lot being the Bonjour Sakura ($2.80) buns filled with red bean paste and salt-cured sakura leaves. Cured between kombu and sea salt, these leaves have a gelatinous slimy sort of texture with hints of preserved plums in its wake. A lovely addition to the thick and sweet sakura infused red bean paste that fills the flat buns. The buns have a peculiar structure, a tad distinct from the usual pillowy fluffy soft textures of Japanese bread, instead, these are slightly dense and chewy even; quite possibly to serve as a better foil to its rich fillings.

Since we all know the saying that behind every successful man, there stands a woman. OCF pays respect to the first wife of Sir Stamford Raffles, founder of our humble island; and so aptly too since the restaurant, housed in the picturesque Arts House is sited at the rear of the ominous Sir Stamford Raffles statue along the banks of the Singapore River.

Menus are all prix fixe, with set lunches starting at $38++ and dinner at $88++. The recently introduced Pre-Theatre Menu offers a 2 course option for $38++ and the 3 course at $48++. Sounds like a bargain doesn't it? But there's a catch. Pre-Theatre seating is only available from 6pm-7pm and patrons are required to return the table back by 8pm. So those running on a tight schedule should really consider this as a dinner destination.

One bite into the Peanut Caramel macaron and I was smitten. I wanted more.

The equation was simple. Put everything from a perennial favourite candy bar and glamorise it with a French twist. That ought to be a winner. And true to word, it was more than I could ever ask for. Snickers, you can now retire to the backseat.
