Betcha never think I would be reviewing a Tze-Char stall, but a whole slew of Italian and Thai eats have got me lusting after some familiar flavors. Lugging myself from spreadsheet designed outlets to concept driven "fast casual", forever cramping joyless food into my blighted face, eating, boating, never satisfied. Then along comes this gem, introduced by the least suspecting foodie member of the family (satiated by just a sandwich diet on a daily basis) - my mum, and it took my palate by force. No outlandish fare, no need for allowances; the end result was something like 4 happy bellies rolled into a car crooning to the tunes of Greenday.

What I was trying to do was solve a problem. It's December, you can guess the problem. The... OMG! I have so much food entry backlog to clear. Let's ogle at my #foodporn photos instead Problem. You can only imagine the amount of build up in the 'bank' given my tortoise rate of expressing myself. Lol, I would like to think of it as 'managing expectations' since plowing into the field of the 'newest and bestest' just crimps my style.

Speaking of bestest, these images, albeit from a long while back, made me stop and stare.

Yes, it's non other than Cafe de Hong Kong and their legendary French Toast. Disclaimer: This may induce severe lust and will cause an almost immediate response of kicking off your PJs in a bid to get there. They don't open on Mondays though. Just saying.

Keng Eng Kee's modern rendition opened up in a make-shift box-like fixture at Pandan Gardens, just a stone's throw away from my maiden church Pandan Calvary Bible Presbyterian. Imagine my surprise when I found out that the tze-char institution had found residence near a spot I've been trying so hard to avoid for the last 5 years of my life (Yes, I admit to being a backsliding Christian; but the orthodox and rigid practises of the church just rubs me in the wrong way). So, contrarily, with little resistance, I packed my bags in search for enlightenment to the establishment coined as serving up 'modern zi-char'

Singapore's restaurants run the gamut from sleek and chic to fuss-free. Yet behind all the glitz and ritz of new year brunches are options of places to dine without breaking the budget. Try Thai street food at the newest instalment of Aroy Dee or settle for something a little more romantic at Halia. Whatever you fancy, here are some of my recommendations for great food, perfect for the new year feasting.

Crab-Hunting @ 姑妈家 & Joyden Treasure

You don't have to have a mother who can remotely cook a single dish in the kitchen without catching the corner of her frilly apron on fire (a bit of a stretch, I know) to appreciate the charms of the food being served up at  姑妈家, located at the far end of the food-centric Macpherson Road.

The storefront and interior are kept minimal and simple as if to preserve high strung days where the establishment grounds were packed wall to wall with hungry diners. Nowadays, the rare family occasional rolls in on a weekday night; the lazy susan bearing significantly lesser burden than in those hay days. That being said, 姑妈家 with its homey environment and earnest sit-down diner experience is something suited for the large family get togethers.
