ADRIFT by David Myers will bait you with their Crazy Late Night Supper Menu

0
COM

I can't pretend that I like any of the restaurants I've ever dined in at Marina Bay Sands very much. But one things for sure, when a kitchen delivers a full-fledged menu (Till 2am) complete with a wild bevy of high-strung cocktails till 4am every morning, It's a keeper and it deserves my support.

ADRIFT by David Myers (read my previous review here) has had raving reviews from me in the past, no thanks to golden crispy ingots of fried chicken karaage dredged through furikake mayonnaise that stole my heart on the first instance. If you've never visited the joint, the new super late-night menu will provide enough incentives for you to do so.

Pollen @ Gardens by the Bay: New Year, New Chef

0
COM

Since it's the start of a new year, I decided that it was timely that I disclosed one of my favourite eats of year 2016. That being the profound modesty of Chef Steve Allen and the new culinary direction he has Pollen embarked on.

Novelty is a major lure for me and this is enhanced by a personalised buggy ride service from the arrival plaza to the restaurant, through lush foliage and scenic views of the Marina Bay waterfront. Sights targeted at calming the senses and whetting the appetite. To top it all off, you'll get to wander into the Flower Dome too! free of charge. Yes, they weren't kidding when they said POLLEN experience.

Suntory Beer Dinner - Enjoy The Premium Malt's at ADRIFT by David Myers

COM

To announce the introduction of Suntory The Premium Malt to Adrift's great beverage menu, we were honoured to be able to attend a special dinner with food pairing specially curated by Chef David himself. Describing itself as a modern take on the vibrant Izakaya, Suntory beers' fit into the menu is almost seamless; pairing effortlessly with the small plates and meats grilled over bincho tan.

But first, fried chicken. and I must admit that the Crispy Karaage here is truly legit. Best dredged thru the accompanying furikake mayo for an explosion of umami flavors.

Sen of Japan: walk the talk

0
COM

Described as a casual dining Japanese restaurant and bar with intimate settings and then further elaborated to have its menu inspired by Chef Nakano, previously of NOBU at Hard Rock Cafe in Las Vegas's fame; Sen of Japan hits the nail on the head. Casual? - not so much for the everyday user; but for a high-roller who have just been dealt a lucky hand at Baccarat; this my friends, is what you would call fast-food; the retracing of steps back to the table fast and furious following a quick refuel.

Sen dishes out modernist Japanese cuisine, the kitschy influence of American culture on the menu highly evident and most enjoyable (if I must say so) at most times.

SAVOUR Wines 2016: reasons to visit Singapore's BIGGEST ever Food and Wine Festival

COM

If you did patronize the SAVOUR event in May this year (read about my experience over here); you would have known what a huge success it was in combining the prowess of several home-grown culinary talents and their mentors together with the magic of fresh produce from far-away lands all under one roof! Good news! as SAVOUR makes a second comeback this year with an event that piques the interest of wine-savvy members with a larger-than-life wine market housing over 400 labels of wines, specially curated from all over the globe.

Punjab Grill @ The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands: Special Monsoon Menu

COM

With the recent rise of Singapore's very own Michelin star bites, our after-dinner conversations at a North Indian Restaurant piqued up my ears.

"So where do you reckon is the best North Indian restaurant in Singapore?" The innocuous query led to many inquisitive stares at me.

With a hand on my heart, I relished the words as they rolled off my tongue, "Punjab Grill at MBS" and a well-known foodie sitting opposite me excitedly approved. Thus my story of this incredible restaurant was recounted to our excited company.

Long Chim: Luxurious Weekend Brunch

0
COM

Come weekends, Long Chim  rolls out a red carpet of fiery dishes that are set to spoil your taste buds. The restaurant's imposing opulence had dulled done several notches in the daylight. The tall glass panelled windows near the frills of the restaurant allowing for the room to be bathed in natural light. Sure, it does sting the eyes of the wretched and severely hungover (recalling that certain occasion); but the full-flavored menu boasted by the likes of a spicy Bloody Mary on the side sure does put things in perspective.

For $60++ per person, diners are offered an endless deluge of dishes chosen with care from the extensive a la carte menu; which takes away the painstaking efforts of having to make a choice. Diners can now enjoy the unique Long chim experience (traditional, family style dining inclusive) with the distinct flavors of Bangkok street food represented every Saturday and Sunday from 12 to 4pm.

[SAVOUR 2016]: Reasons why it's worth a visit

COM

Reasons why its worth paying a visit to SAVOUR 2016?

I would say, because of Fried Chicken. Hallelujah. Or maybe complimentary entry to festival grounds? hmph... if that isn't reason enough to warrant a visit, we'll just have to dive a little deeper.

First things first, to make sure we're on the same page, patrons of last year Savour 2015 (you can read my wrap-up here) would have noticed that premises have been severely downsized. No, it's not because officiates have lower budgets but because they've decided to space it out over 3 sessions throughout the year to pique the interest of gourmands and specific target groups; in which I share a strong affinity with the second group of 'outcasts'.

The 2016 SAVOUR calendar looks a little something like this
SAVOUR Gourmet: 12 - 15 May
SAVOUR Wines: 8 - 11 Sept
SAVOUR Christmas: 17 - 20 Nov

Long Chim: Celebrate the celebrity restaurant's 1st Birthday with $9 dishes all day long

COM

Come end of March, Long Chim turns 1 and in lieu of these festive occasion, they will be offering a plethora of signature dishes, new offerings and iconic Thai cocktails for just $9++ on the 30th March, all day from 12pm-12am.

The specially curated menu includes charming starters such as chiang mai larp of chicken, grilled pork skewers and crunchy prawn cakes while an entourage of spicy knock-out curries, red curry of roast duck will also be peddled at 9 dollars. Should the food be a tad too overwhelming in flavors, take a swig of the special beverages on offer. The melrose fizz getting my vote for best thirst quencher, its bubbly personality making for better conversations across the table.

[CNY'16] Ce La Vi: Modern Asian CNY Menu and the most 'HUAT' Yu Sheng.

0
COM

CE LA VI. The ostentatious establishment that occupies the 57th floor of the iconic Marina Bay Sands, was where I partook in a lo hei that I deem the most 'HUAT' of the year. Mainly because, you can't get any higher than that in terms of elevation. The seemingly transparent act of tossing yu sheng from a vantage point garnering enough luck to power me for the whole year, or so I hope.

The iconic rooftop location houses a energetic club that promotes the pursuit of pleasures as well as a fine dining establishment on the other side, sporting floor to ceiling window panels for some unparalleled views of the city skyline. This Lunar New Year, CE LA VI rolls out a lavish Asian inspired meal with the over-indulgent option of wine pairing; a somewhat mandatory choice when exposed to peer pressure from the opulent settings.

DC Comics Super Heroes Cafe: Festive Season Menu | Better late than never

Christmas celebrations at The Shopped at Marina Bay Sands veers away from the usual posh nosh fare with the festive season 3-course menu at DC Comics Super Heroes Cafe swooping in to the rescue of all the daddy and mummies in distress, fretting over where to bring the kids to for Christmas celebrations.

Dishing out American cuisine with a heavy inception of Superhero charm in every aspect - cocoa powder stenciled patterns on drinks to batman shaped carrot cutouts in your soup;  DC Comics Super Hero cafe is perfect for the young ones or perhaps those still flagrantly young at heart.

Weekend Haunts: Vasco + Long Chim

Weekends are hard to come by, and when it does swing by, we hit hard and paint the town red. Whilst you're at it, make sure to get some good grub into your system; because nothing fuels the fun more than positive dining experience.

So, here are some places to check out over the coming weekend! Let's make a date.

Newly opened cocktail bar, Vasco located on Hong Kong street has got some mean grind, knowing that its current team spirit constitutes of those gregarious ones from leading local cocktail bar, The Cufflink Club; and with kitchen muscle provided by former executive chef of Esquina Tapas Bar, we've got a formidable force on our hands.

Todai Restaurant: Birthday Dishes from around the world.

0
COM

Reading up on my last visit to Todai Restaurant in 2013 (you can read about it here), it stirred up a somewhat nonchalant vibe in me; the food doing little to excite my wearied taste buds apart from the initial burst of excitement mustered with the bewildering sight of assortment and dazzling array of variety... that, eventually came to pass after nipping my way through the buffet line only to be disenchanted by the quality of the food.

2 year later, I get called back in lieu of TODAI's 4th anniversary promotions, a clear sign that the buffet had successfully received a massive audience through the years. My lacklustre review imparting zilch effect on the booming business obviously (who cares about the small fry anyway). This time, TODAI's presents some of the best birthday delicacies from around the world to add a global touch to the festive celebrations. To be honest, I was charmed by the notion of having signature dishes representative of different countries on the buffet table. What better way to revel than to indulge in birthday dishes umpteen times? (Go shorty, it's your birthday, We're goin party, like its your birthday)

Caffe B: Affordable Set lunches in MBS

0
COM

Caffe B set in lush satin settings, a secretive sort of environment fine-tuned by plenty of luxe design decisions, offers diners an oasis perfect for constructive business meetings. These are complemented by bespoke light details, grand chandeliers overhead and raw metal grills reminiscent of Aztec cultures, that work effectively as partitions, offering enclaves for private discussions. The veteran F&B patron in the mall has recently rolled out an inexpensive $25++ three-course set lunch menu to lure in the office crowds. Ok, so let me deliberate before you go down.

Cut by Wolfgang Puck: Best Meal of the year.

0
COM

I apologise for my late notice, or lack of one for some, but I've been back in Singapore for the last 16 days. Incessantly sussing out the bustling food scene whilst at it.

With that mission in tow, and a empty cavernous stomach; I had one of THE BEST MEALS OF THE YEAR. Courtesy of a dearest friend of mine at CUT by Wolfgang Puck.

Mind you, this meal didn't come cheap, but at the end of the day, you must revel in the satisfactions that it incites. The thorough but non presumptuous service, staggeringly excellent quality of produce used and the chi-chi ambiance all around that leaves one vulnerable to feel an animalistic sense of desire.

The meal came to a smooth start with complimentary sliders and slices of crisp sourdough being presented at the table alongside freshly churned butter. Special mentions going out to the breadsticks that graced the table, a temptation that lurked around gracefully, attempting to spoil our appetite for the mainworks.

The side table was brought out and the gigantic cuts of marbled fats and proteins carried out for closer inspection. Be very amazed.

I have to admit, amidst all the glasses of recommended wines and the enveloping darkness of the room, everything becomes a blur. The food, oh, that lusting images still fixated in my dreams leaves little for imagination. Every bite filling a void that you have been left stranded with for every bad/mediocre steak you have had in your entire life. So this is what it feels like.

His: Snake River Farms Angus Beef, 220g Rib Eye Steak ($185)

Mine: True Japanese Wagyu from Miyazaki Prefecture Kyushu, Japan
170g Fillet Mignon ($220)

Our sides: Creamed Spinach + Sauteed Wild Mushrooms

For all it was worth, the true Japanese wagyu was a work of art, elevated only by the expertise of the kitchen in maintaining a perfect temperature, a perfect sear and all those juices sealed in, in a mad web of fats. The sides, another testimonial of the chefs' abilities to appreciate simple ingredients and churning out an honest complimentary dish to the steaks on the other end. Best creamed spinach I've had thus far.

The surprise birthday cake and the gregarious chantings of songs from the waitstaff was just icing on the cake after that.

If I had passed away that night. You would have seen a smile plastered on my face.

Jin Shan Lou: Walk the talk please.

Jin Shan Lou located at the lobby of the Marina Bay Sands Hotel has an imposing opulence to it, perhaps it's just me, but dining within it's regal aesthetic surroundings made for a somewhat uncomfortable experience. Thank goodness for the velvety arm chairs that made the long dinner a little more tolerable.

The dinner was spotted by tiny glimmers of hope; take for example the Jin Shan Special Combination that warmed us off. The platter consisting of roast duck, roast pork and cold chicken; vanished quickly before our eyes as the lazy susan took two spins on the dance floor. My favourite was the roast duck with its beautifully crisped skin and succulent flesh. The chicken paled in comparison with a somewhat dry interior.

Our next course was a Seafood Soup served in mini Pumpkin, another excellent dish that was well thought and executed. Presentation was spot on with the mini pumpkin steamed to perfection, ready for the diners to scrape away at it's tender sweet flesh whilst slurping down the sweet seafood broth studded with generous bits of prawns and dried scallops.

Pass up on the Golden Sands Fresh Prawn with Salted Egg, the batter on the prawns lack the tight crispness and the salted egg yolks sauce was grainy and strangely spicy at some points with the unsuspecting bits of chili padi conjuring up coughing fits amongst some of the diners.

Instead, turn your attention to the Steamed Cod Fillet with Chinese Wine and Egg White , this dish, similar to the version I had at Crystal Jade presented itself with a replacement of more luxe ingredients. The Cod Fish sat like a dainty beauty atop a bed of fluffy egg whites steeped in chinese wine and a myriad of sauces, making for an explosion of umami with every mouthful. Definitely my favourite dish of the night.

Cartilage Soup? My eyes trailed across the tasting menu, summoning a bit of doubt in me. Frankly, the Poached "Xian Cai" Served in Cartilage Soup turned out to be another winner, the cartilage adding a wee bit of milky silkiness to the broth. The balance of flavors and the soft greens making for a delightful experience.

The Mandatory carb dish at the end of our Chinese dinner was a Fujian Wheat Vermicelli with Shredded Meat. This dish despite it's simplicity, came with an extremely well balanced ratio of noodles to ingredients. The prawns, fried eggs and silvers of beansprouts adding a much needed contrast to the well seasoned noodles. Pity I didn't get to eat much of it warm...

Dessert was a Chilled Mango Sago with Pomelo. Didn't fancy this dish much because it was way to sweet for me, almost akin to eating a bowl full of sweetened mango puree.

Based on the dinner tonight, Jin Shan Restaurant has many hits and misses. But without a doubt, one of it's major draw factor would be the ridiculous operating hours, opening from 11pm-4am daily. So all you night owls out there, this is a spot worth checking out!

HGW invited session: Todai

DSCF2954_zps30c7fff2

Elmer Dills, famous Los Angeles food critics, once described Todai as "THE MOTHER OF ALL SEAFOOD BUFFETS"

After taking a sneak peak at its premises in the basement of the ultra sleek mall of Marina Bay Sands, my expectations grew by a mile. Beware at this point...

Dinner at Todai was a invited food-tasting session by HungryGoWhere and I arrived ravenous from a hard days work in the kitchen. Thank goodness for the lovely Kirin beer to get conversations started over the table. Not that it was too important given that the buffet line was the star of the show. I very quickly ran over to introduce myself.

What I loved most about Todai's international seafood buffet spread was the diversity and structure of it all. If my memory doesn't fail me, there was the pizza and pasta section, noodles, korean food, Churrasco station, crabs, sashimi and sushi station, cold cuts and salads, teppanyaki (NEW), chinese food, dim sum and dessert stations.

To cut to the chase, if you, like me, do not excel at orientating buffets then heed my advise on this one. Attack the Alaskan Crabs, beef short rib, sushi, sashimi and Churrasco stations for maximum gratification.

DSCF2956_zpsb9cf02f5

You'll be surprised to find out that most of the kitchen staff behind the counters hail from Korean hence do not be surprised if communication is minimal despite the open kitchen concept. Inherently, the Korean food (try the pan fried egg battered fish) is impressive despite it's potential to be neglected in a predominantly seafood menu concept. Some of my favorites of the night include the pork belly from the Churrasco section and the wide array of colorful sushi unique to the Todai's kitchen.

deep fried ginseng root. a truly subjective taste matter to debate. I wasn't sold on this one.

DSCF2961_zpsa19bfa57

After filling yourself to the brim with all things savoury and making an extra run just to double check that all items have been sampled. Make your way to the dessert counter. The cream cheese swiss roll and new york cheesecake were delightful; so are the shortbread cookies that would make a great accompaniment to a cup of hot coffee as finale. Avoid the apple crumble and brownie unless you want a parched desert as a mouth.

DSCF2966_zps790c98de

In all honesty, I find Todai's buffet a bit on the pricey side. An affair only justifiable should you be an avid crab fan willing to get your hands dirty. Unfortunately, I failed miserably in that department and on hindsight, would not have parted with the money for such ordinary fare. Todai offers a very casual "non-buffet" type dining experience gearing more towards family outings and large gatherings. So do give it a shot if you fall within that category and are urgently seeking a venue large enough to cater to your group size.
