Known for its premium durian desserts, Goodwood Park hotel holds the realm of being one of the best dessert makers, where hotels are concerned. L'Espresso is proud to be dishing out a Victorian English theme high tea buffet till the 22nd July. Boasting a huge variety of savoury pastries, fresh fruit, sweets and bite-sized pastries, you'll feel the imminent tug of your waistband. Here are some of my favourites.

The Clifford Pier is in a league of its own. That's in terms of heritage value as well as ambiance. First and foremost, being a landmark built to serve as a landing point for immigrants and other sea passenger, the place is steeped in history and it's emulated through the grandeur and majesty of the venue which Fullerton has painstakingly taken to restore.
For a taste of localised flavors, interlocking tastes of sambal chili, dark soy sauce and garlic; look to The Clifford Pier's new Singapore Heritage Afternoon Tea. The selection of 8 savoury and 8 sweet items, a thoughtful representation of Singapore's culinary past and present. Make sure to complement your afternoon tea experience with a choice of beverage ranging from local Teh Tarik to a selection of excellently curated tea, each touting a fancy name such as Silver Moon and Magic Moment.

Leisurely afternoons come by so rarely; and when they do. All you want sometimes, is just a soothing cuppa tea followed by a convoy of dainty sweet treats to put the cocktail hour into perspective; and perhaps the bonus company of a good-humoured individual to match your devour-ment pace.
Rolled out on the 3rd May, the 3 tiers of goodness at La Ventana includes puffy cinnamon laden churros, salmon gravlax croissant, homemade salted caramel chocolate tartlets and more, prepared single-handedly by the Pastry Chef at La Ventana.

The sweeping view of the busy streets along Orchard Road never seems to fail my amusement every time I step up to the quaint tea salon that is Arteastiq; squirrelled away into the most obscure corner of the Mandarin Gallery. Despite (or rather, because) of its mysterious seclusion, the joint sees a roaring business; funded by Tai-tais cradling their porcelain cups of tea and the occasional painting enthusiast who gamely decides to go for an art jamming session.
For those who prefer the day-time vibes on a weekend, you'll be glad to know that Arteastiq's newly launched High Tea set, though severly overdue, has risen to standards with a dedicated bakery team now manning an entire station near the entrance to the shop.

My blatant statement in the front goes to show I like Colony at the Ritz Carlton an awful lot. I'm sure a lot of you share the same sentiments about the spanking new buffet line to feature heritage cuisines opened for operation in September 2015. To cut to the chase, if I could get away with the financial burdens of dining in everyday, I would...
Touting eight different conservatory kitchens, each helmed with a 'live' station with display of culinary showmanship, detailing the decadent dishes decking the stations; its easy to be transfixed in the artful skill of cooking demonstrated by the amusingly amicable chefs. But it won't be too long before the lure of assertive scents of spices get to you. Pulling you in to haul the goodies back to your seats.

Here it is, a high tea stand exuding grandeur and finesse from all angles; even from the makeshift Velcro strips stuck to the edges, converting a humble wine rack into a garden-esque display of petite sweet treats and savory bites. All is innocent and expectations kept to a minimum, until you chomp down on the dainty Eclair of Singapore-style chili crab meat and there is an explosion of flavors.

For those celebrating Christmas in sunny Singapore... my heart goes out to you. Sure, we don't have white Santas on every street corner, nor reindeers or even the slightest chance of snow. What we do have is food and plenty of it. My next few blog posts will display the lucrativeness of this festive period, covering everything from burgers, festive sundaes to gorgeous terrarium creations; some good, some bad and some down right ugly. With Christmas only coming in once a year, and people marginally more generous and good spirited, why not cash in on this holiday season? There's no debating this annual mandatory plot.
Let's kick off the merrymaking with a trip down to Angelina which promises a warm rustic French Christmas with its festive menus. Available daily till the 31st of December, it's 3 course set menu priced at a wallet friendly $60++ comprises appetizers such as the Chestnut and Maderia Veloute or the Pan-Seared Foie Gras with rhubarb compote and fruit toast. The former, perfumed with the warm aroma of toasted chestnut does bring to mind a joyous celebration in front of the fireplace, the slight tipple of Madeira into the smooth concoction bestowing the dish with a silky rich edge. Those seeking something a little heavier on the palate should veer for the latter, reinforced by a sturdy slab of perfectly seared foie gras that would have left an oil slick in your mouth if not for the puckering sour rhuarb compote. Baked Angus beef au poivre with Forest Mushroom Fricassee fills in as an excellent main, though I admittedly would have loved a little more salt rather than black pepper crusting my steak as the overall combination of peppery mushroom fricassee rendered the whole dish a pepper wasteland. Other options include the walnut crusted halibut or baked duck breast. The ominous glare from the words 'Dessert of the Day' throws everyone off guard; I honestly can't vouch that you would receive a lovely surprise package. All you can do it hope and pray that there would be a citrus cheesecake of sorts that miraculously finds it way to your table.

With a whole slew of restaurants/cafes being opened every week; diners are being spoilt for choice whenever the weekend rolls in and the hellish decision as to 'where to eat' has to be made. Take our advice and commit to visiting the oldies (but goodies). Here are some of our picks for the newest menus in town, discounting the fact that these joints have been stationed there long enough to prove that they have a certain amount of substance to survive the gruelling trials of the F&B scene in Singapore. These joints are dishing out heavenly fried chicken, tender beef cheek rendang and outstanding eggs benedict, all guaranteed to make your weekends a whole better.

To cut to the chase, popular vintage high tea at House @ Dempsey has seen a face lift. Currently donning a more herbaceous look with the kitchen taking a conscious effort to incorporate fresh herbs into their signature comfort food.
It's all about making the prettiest plates here for that ultimate flat lay to be exhibited with the intentions of braggadocio or accidental evidence that you've skipped work for a couple of hours on a Friday afternoon to have high tea with the girlies. carelessness. TSK.

Sometimes I reckon I can be a little selfish, but here's a deal I would love to share with you guys before the ticking of the clocks rule the end of it. Running till the end of this month, O'Coffee Club will be dishing out their mid-day offering from 3-5pm daily until the 30th April.
If you're like me, and living it up like a tai-tai isn't quite your traditional practise, do allow me to persuade you to let your guards down just this once.., mainly because in contrary to popular belief, indulging in high tea does not have to be an expensive experience.
O'Coffee Club three-tiered high tea spread is priced at a wallet friendly $28++ each, comprising a mouthwatering lineup of sweets and savouries with a choice of premium and gourmet beverages.
Breaking it down, the top tier features a pair of gargantuan Raisin Scones with browned crust and pillowy soft insides. Delicious when eaten on its own, the homemade orange peel mascarpone does give it an edge.
Following which, the other highlights of the second tier include the Chocolate eclairs, Carrot Cake and Mango Diva amidst the jaw-dropping stash of goodies. Unlike the usual run-of-the-mill renditions, these do carry an air of finesse with the moist carrot cake stealing the limelight.
Those looking to fill in on something a little more substantial can jump to the bottom tier with an array of 3 different sandwiches,. The Smoked Salmon Sandwich being my favourite of the lot with the fluffy focaccia as a base and a generous serve of smoked salmon and honey mustard dressing adrift.
To be perfectly honest, I cannot find a reason to deny this treat, especially if you're caught in the predicament of whether to have lunch or indulge in a bit of tea time, in that case, the afternoon tea set at Coffee Club will fit you perfectly. Nothing like a quiet cozy space to chill the dreary afternoon away.
Note that this will be available at O'Coffee Club Milennia Walk, Paragon, Raffles City, Wheelock Place, Wisma Atria and Changi Airport Terminal 3 only until the 30th April.

Let's start off with a bit of honesty here. Truths are always nice in the light of day.
I've never had Valentines day dinner in a restaurant before.
There, I've said it. Perhaps its my unfortunate run-ins with really stingy ex-boyfriends or maybe its a blessing in disguise as the sight of overly affectionate couples and the saturation of love themes splashed loud and proud in all forms make me nauseous. I am a generous lover, but I rather do all that in the privacy of the bedroom.
However, if I have to choose one place for this years celebrations, it would have to be Arteastiq. Mainly because overpriced, second-rate food makes me pissed, and to be frank, there's no space for love in the presence of shoddy cooking. Arteastiq delivers on all fronts, presenting 2 sets, one for the Ladies and one for the Gentlemen, encouraging cheeky sharing and careless whispers exchanged over the tables.

High tea has never ever been on my agenda despite it's retained popularity among my countrymen these days. It's subliminal links to gluttony and unnecessary luxury (both of time and material in the form of expensive silverware) has more often than not impeded me from indulging in such a meal format. However this time around, with an invitation extended, I proceeded to cross my legs and prep for some tea sipping, pinkie sticking out action.
L'Espresso has been churning out some of the best high tea experience in Singapore since the late 1960s. With such long historical references to boot and a dining room packed full of hungry patrons to feed. I was certain that I had stumbled upon 'a real deal'.
From petite finger sandwiches to the more hearty stews for the famished; L'Espresso's spread has it all covered. I started off with a plateful of delectable sandwiches and wraps. Word of advice: avoid the croissant which may be a tad bit dry and dive straight for the Slow Cooked Farm chicken in Crepe. Tender, supple pieces of poached chicken wrapped in a thin savoury crepe. Right up my alley. Also, give the Nicoise Tartlet with Tuna Tataki a go; a moreish bite of palatable food.
And as you move along the counter top, you'll have a face-off with the fried food station. For those planning to give this a miss, I implore you not too as L'Espresso does an excellent job of this station. It's Mini Fish Goujons and Mini Karaage fried to perfection with supple innards and beautifully seasoned outer coatings; the goma sauce on the side providing a magnificent pairing.
Not to be missed are the scones from Goodwood Park Hotel. At L'Espresso, it's the details that elevate this humble tea time treat; the freshly muddle raspberry compote for example. We picked an assortment of jams and fresh fruits to accompany the Blueberry Scone; and with that, I still remain convinced that this reigns supremacy as one of the best scones I've had in Singapore thus far. Truth.
For something a little more substantial, L'Espresso has newly introduced the Black Forest Ham and Rosette Salami. It's good but nothing spectacular. Relish instead in the deliciously rich and salty Braised Kurobuta Pork with Hungarian Sweet Paprika, served with brioche on the side to wipe up the 'chap', it didn't take much persuasion for me to return back for second servings. The Smoked Salmon with herbs and breadcrumbs on the other hand disappoints with it's flaky and dried out state, exhausted from its long hours under the sunbathing lamps overhead.
Desserts are aplenty at L'Espresso; but like any buffet spread there are severe hits and misses. The downfall of it's sweet offerings probably attributed to the incorrect storage temperatures that lead to a strange translation of flavors in the mousse-like desserts and a weird mish-mash of textures. Some of my favourites include the Tiramisu Cake, Creme brulee and the Bread and Butter Pudding.
Ice Cream anybody?
High tea at L'Espresso comes with 2 servings of coffee or tea (from my beloved ex-company TWG teas). If sitting all straight backed and indulging in petite fare is your thing, then dining here may prove irresistible with charges only set at $45 per adult and $22.50 per child.

Posh Nosh in Flip Flops
Dining at the the Royal Copenhagen Tea lounge was a considerably spontaneous decision on our part. And as we shuffled across the marbled floor to join the steadily growing queue of impatient customers, feeling rather out of place in our casual clothing admist the glitz and glamor of the surrounding retail shops, our minds were put at ease seeing the other shoddily dressed customers. More so by the young boys still in prams with legs wide open in a less than classy slumber.
As we took our seats, it took us a while to grow accustomed to the fine finishings around the dining area. The smorgasbord of exquisite cutlery perched perilously on the walls above unsuspecting diners, the fine china plates with delicate prints used for our foods and so on. Peeking at the platters of food being carried to the neighbouring tables, temptation quickly took the leash and we were quick to decide on her majesty tea set ($29.90 ++) for 2.
First to come with the set was the quiche du jour which was the onion and leek quiche. This was outstanding and it took the liberty of destroying all the revolting recollections I have had of quiche. Words such as 'cold','eggy' vanished into thin air, only to be replaced by a tyranny of poetic adjectives which manifested themselves in the form of 'ooos' and 'ahhs'
The open face sandwich served as part of the savoury deal of the high tea set featured two mini sandwiches; each drowned in a sea of rich fillings. The shrimp sandwich was delightful with the lingering creaminess of mayonaise and the gentle nuances of saltiness provided by the robustily red caviar followed by a gentle heat of the paprika sauces. The other sandwich on the other hand dealt a poorer hand with the fluffy egg wrapped with smoked salmon proving unmemorable.
Chasing closely behind were the choice of cake (from the gorgeous display in the front) and 2 scones with jam, butter and cream. Served up with our tea and coffee, one can't help but feel as though it's desserts after a mini savoury treat.
Probably familiar to those who have visited the Royal Copenhagen Tea Lounge, the blueberry cheesecake was the Pièce de résistance. Creamy with a chance of tanginess, this glorious confection speckled with blueberries throughout and then enveloped with a thick blueberry compote was one of the better cheesecakes I've had in the longest time. Period.
Did I mention how much I love the blue printed porcelain cups used to serve our coffee and tea in. Incredibly quaint.
The only hiccup that occured with the service was our forgotten order of scones which took an overbearing 15 mins after the cake to arrive, and only after a gentle reminder to the staff. Hey, I admit to being an impatient person.. but it's the infamous scones we're talking about here. No grudges beared though since observation proved that the cafe was a scene of hyper bustling activity for the better of the afternoon. The scones of course turned out great, with a tender crumb and warm thoroughly. Perfect when washed down with a cup of english tea.
So next time you're in the vicinity and craving for some good english high tea, do give the Royal Copenhagen a go. But word of caution, do take note of the snaking queues on weekends.
