There's something about the imagery of piping hot coffee, rivulets of milk froth working with tangles of hot coffee forming intricate patterns that is synonymous with the basic necessities of the working man; newly opened Twenty Eight Cafe would know. Opening it's doors at 7 30am in the morning to pander to the needs of the Mount Sophie and Mount Emily residents. High ceilings, white washed spaces interspersed with bits of foliage, and modish hanging light fixtures; it's not a surprise to see that the cafe has amassed quite a following even in the first few weeks of its opening. Wi-Fi does help, of course.
[WED Buzz] Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf introduces new Peach Jasmine range
Cheers to the weekend (wait, what? it's only Wednesday?) with Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf's new Peach Jasmine Nitro Cold Brew Tea and Peach Jasmine Cold Brew. The Nitro Cold Brew Tea is the first ever in Singapore - jasmine tea cold steeped for 5 hours before adding in peach puree made of real peaches and finally infused with nitrogen.

Affogato Bar is Asia's first cafe that specialises in affogatos. As someone who is a lover of both coffee and ice cream, I've had affogatos a couple of times before straying away, since realising that the ice cream often melted into the coffee too quickly and both elements could not be tasted distinctly on its own. While I was slightly sceptical about how an entire cafe can be bourne out of a single dessert, I was even more hopeful that the cafe could change my mind about Affogatos.
The Affogato Bar released 3 special Affogatos for the Christmas season - Lady Claret, Firewood and Toasted Smores. After a series of careful consideration, we eventually opted for Lady Claret and Toasted Smores.

I hate to say, but I missed the memo about it being an outdoor picnic event. And as much as I despised the heavy smokescreen of humidity there was in the bay area, a well-thought out launch party coupled with gorgeous wicker baskets and flower arrangements pretty much MADE my Saturday.
Suzette, the third venture from the same peeps behind popular Lola's Cafe and On The Table is a seemingly brave attempt at stepping out of its comfort zone (the suburbs and neighbourhoods). Purely dessert in concept, the smallish cafe offers a wide variety of sweets ranging from their signature tarts to a multitude of butter cream cakes on ornate cake stands.

Tied of fighting the crazy queue situation at Symmetry on Sunday mornings? Fret not, as their baby sister outlet Xiao Ya Tou dishes out an equally epic Asian brunch on weekends from 9am to 4pm! Opened by Abby Lim, chef-owner of Symmetry; you can expect to find the same league of brunch nosh here, but served up with an ode to Asian and Mod-Sin fare.

Before you jump on the car and race on over to the nearest and newest Westie joint in high hopes for an immaculate waffle affair. Hold your horses and read on.
Cheng's Gourmet Food bar located along the infamous stretch of 'sure tio summon' shop houses along Clementi Road. A blessing for NUS students looking to curb their late night munchies since the vicinity houses popular joints such as Fong Seng Nasi Lemak and Niqqi's The Cheese Prata Shop. For a healthier option with more solid bites, you can now turn to Cheng's Gourmet Food Bar as an alternative. And if it's beer you're after, Cheng's touts quite an extensive list.

With the recent opening of hipster enclave Timbre+ in One North, the once dire foodie landscape has seen massive limelight in the recent weeks from both the media and the locals alike. On hindsight, it's strange to see how the vendors arriving with feeding buckets to nourish the hive of activities generated by the melting pot of talent, ideas and business opportunities, are so late to the game. Still, better late than never, right?
Traversing the area looking for lunch options can be a slightly daunting affair given the minimal foliage coverage and soaring temperatures in the industrial fixture. So to cut you some slack, here are some of my 'tried-and-tested' joints in and about the region.

There is a lot going on at Rise and Grind Co, a slightly claustrophobic yet seemingly cosy space in a boxed up settings just a literal, stone's throw away from the main plaza. In this space, the kitchen takes precedence with an endless bustle of activity behind stove tops, and the smell of fresh ground coffee adrift. Dishes meander between wildly innovative and 'the safe choice' with a particular homage paid to Asian cuisine.
As most of you would already know, Rise and Grind Co. is one of those cafes which I would never bad mouth. Cussing under my breathe at the numerous pop-ups that have proven to be empty vessels financed by carbon copied concepts, brilliant decor and not so outstanding fare that leaves a burrow in your wallet whilst digging deep for reasons to make a return visit. Thankfully, Rise and Grind Co falls out of that category, settling in a particularly fond nook and cranny of my heart.

Imagination worth the added price? Now, that's worth debating over at newbie cafe 20F Speciality Coffeehouse located along Foch road just right beside a Pig Organ Soup institution .Yes, so an unhosted tasting would mean a mandatory partaking of their illustrious Duck and Waffle combination. I'm sorry, but I can't hold out against the lure of a rendition that debacles my love for chicken and waffles.
Entering the shady alcoves of the cafe, the back premises offering several twists and turns in terms of ambiance; things could get interesting, I thought. In fact, the rest of the meal did unravel in a fun sort of way. In ways that those who love cafe cuisine wish would happen more often in Singapore.

There's even more excuse to visit Open Farm Community now especially with the Social Market #2 running its second rounds to usher in the new year on the 9th and 10th of January from 10am to 4pm. If you've made the wiser choice of being the early bed or.. the late comer, there are benefits to both; some being access to soap demonstrations, as well as yoga and Pilate classes.
But first, let's talk food. With the extensive brunch and lunch menu at your disposal in the greenhouse, here are some of our recommendations straight off the bat.

With a whole slew of restaurants/cafes being opened every week; diners are being spoilt for choice whenever the weekend rolls in and the hellish decision as to 'where to eat' has to be made. Take our advice and commit to visiting the oldies (but goodies). Here are some of our picks for the newest menus in town, discounting the fact that these joints have been stationed there long enough to prove that they have a certain amount of substance to survive the gruelling trials of the F&B scene in Singapore. These joints are dishing out heavenly fried chicken, tender beef cheek rendang and outstanding eggs benedict, all guaranteed to make your weekends a whole better.

I concur that the East-siders have it better when it comes to food. It has always been an unspoken rule where nobody debates the East-siders choice when it comes to dinner options, their exposure to unearthly delicacies at a young age grooming their intelligible taste buds to ultimate snobbishness. I recall my first boyfriend (hailing from the better side, of course), who spent the first 3 days of our lives together looking at me as if I were a complete alien; our journey to the Joo Chiat area for dinner bringing an oddball glow to my face as we trod the well beaten eaten paths. Well, my ignorance has long gone, my frigidity with the eastern munchies gradually bridged over the years.
As do most cuisines, well , needless to say, the cafe scene on the flipside have a slight edge over us west-siders too. Craftsmen Specialty Coffee located at both Siglap Village and Eastwood is a contender for this myth. It's recent dabbling into sourdough on the menu pulling off a healthier image with quiet subversion.

A world of excellent truffle honey french toast exists in the same universe as the posh lobster croissant in this quaint eatery along gentrified Seah Street.
Brunch, is the ultimate meal to have when the weekend comes around and has eclipsed every other meal when it comes to where diners are spending their dollars. Bridge restaurant and bar, joins in the masses, offering up this popular, affordable luxury with a different twist.

It's not everyday that you have the luxury to sit down to a lavish lunch without having thoughts of impending doom from the stockpiling workload weighing heavily on your mind. But with this little window of opportunity to escape as far away from work as possible, its always a good idea to treat yourself to something a little more substantial, a little more gratifying, if I might add. Here are a few of my go-to places for a quick lunch with perks of enlightenment and spiritual healing afterwards.

I'm a real stickler for a good weekend meal, not that I'm not contented with my temporary out-of-job situation rendering my weekdays to assume pseudo-vacation vibes; but there's nothing like watching the worlds' pace slow down hugely, and your alcoholic ways deemed as socially acceptable practices for a small window of two days.
After a huge night out, the first thing I crave for is a good stomach-warming brunch, one to ease the queasy innards. FYR in the city offers up some unique brunch offerings, backed by the horsepower of the Josper Wood Charcoal Oven outback; the usage of lychee wood imbuing most of its dishes with a bonafide smoky note.

Earlier this month, the first ever frozen custard shop was launched in Singapore. Density Frozen Custard, flaunting explicit photos of velvety ice cream tongues and promises of Pumpkin Pie on their instagram feed aroused all curious bones in my body. A trip down to the joint was inevitable.
Okay, so what sets frozen custard apart from the traditional gelato?

Disregard my prejudices towards Antoinette please. A couple
of macarons later and I was too quick to call the shots on the establishment. Time evidently helped to settle ill feelings and perhaps soothe
out operational hiccups; years later I was back to sample the 4th Anniversary
set menu at the local establishment that had taken to expanding its dominion to
2 other outlets outside of its Penhas Road headquarters.
In celebration of its 4th birthday, Chef Pang has rolled out
a 4 course set menu available in May for a budget friendly $40++ per pax. The verdict after the jump.
But first, let's talk CAKE.

It seems that the brunch movement in restaurants per se is strong. An exercise deemed necessary to sustain a good healthy business, especially in the local context. The endless deluge of eggs, waffles and pancakes, mostly mandatory menu items for weekend meals before the sun sets.
Roosevelt's Diner and Bar for one, is a business that has thrived on serving an excellent menu line up of American comfort foods, ranging from the quintessential burgers to the crispy Southern Fried chicken; all of which had stuck to my heart like hot glue. Evident from my previous reviews (here and here); my love for Roosevelt's comfort nosh cannot be retracted. However, this time round, they've decided that they want a piece of that pie, breaking in an, all new weekend brunch menu.
